United Opens Massive New Concourse and Club at Houston IAH

United Airlines has launched a new concourse at Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), featuring its largest United Club in the Americas.

United Airlines has opened a new concourse and its largest United Club in the Americas at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Houston. The expansion focuses on Concourse E, which adds several new gates to the airline’s primary Texas hub.

“This expansion represents a major investment in our Houston hub and our ability to serve our customers,” a United spokesperson said. The new infrastructure helps United manage the high volume of domestic and international flights that pass through IAH, specifically for passengers connecting between local flights and long-haul routes to Latin America and the Caribbean.

Dining Shifts: From Fast Food to Local Flavors

The expansion at IAH changes the dining landscape in the terminal. United moved away from standard fast-food chains to include local Houston brands. Travelers can now find regional favorites like The Breakfast Klub and Pitaya within the new concourse.

This shift toward regional food brands replaces the generic terminal dining that often characterizes large airports. Access to Houston-specific flavors helps passengers manage long layovers. The addition of these restaurants provides more variety for those waiting for international connections.

Upgraded Amenities in the Concourse E United Club

The centerpiece of the expansion is the new United Club in Concourse E. This facility is the largest United Club in the Americas. Because large hubs like IAH often face overcrowding during peak morning and evening departure banks, the larger footprint provides more space for travelers.

The lounge features specific amenities designed for different types of travelers. Business travelers can use dedicated work areas and private workstations. Those on long-haul international flights have access to shower suites to refresh before a flight. The dining area includes both buffet-style service and made-to-order options.

This new space benefits MileagePlus members with Premier status, including Silver, Gold, Platinum, and 1K tiers. Holders of United Club memberships or specific high-end credit cards can also access the facility. The increased capacity helps reduce the frequency of travelers arriving at the lounge to find no available seating.

Maximizing MileagePlus Value at IAH

For frequent flyers, the expanded lounge access adds value to the United loyalty ecosystem. Travelers can earn miles through various methods, but maximizing value often requires using transfer partners. You can transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards or Bilt Rewards to your MileagePlus account at a 1:1 ratio. Marriott Bonvoy points also transfer to United at a 3:1 ratio.

These miles allow for award travel that can be supplemented by the comfort of the new IAH lounge facilities. While United’s MileagePlus program competes with Delta’s SkyMiles and American Airlines’ AAdvantage, the expansion of physical infrastructure like the Concourse E club provides a tangible benefit to status holders. Unlike Delta, which uses a complimentary upgrade waitlist, United offers PlusPoints for confirmed upgrades, a feature that remains a key differentiator for its most loyal flyers.

United uses Houston as a gateway for flights to Latin America. Expanding the footprint at IAH improves connection reliability. More gates give the airline flexibility to assign aircraft and manage delays. This helps prevent a single delay from causing a chain reaction of missed connections.

This investment reinforces United’s dominance at IAH. While Southwest Airlines maintains a large presence at Houston Hobby Airport (HOU), United’s focus on IAH targets the international and premium traveler. This strategy differs from American Airlines’ focus on Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) or Delta’s concentration at Atlanta (ATL).

Star Alliance members also benefit from this expansion. Because Star Alliance is the largest global alliance, status with partners like Lufthansa or ANA often grants access to these premium spaces when flying on United. This allows international travelers to maintain a consistent level of service when moving between continents.

Traveler Tips for the New Concourse

If you are flying through IAH via Concourse E, keep these points in mind:

  • Plan for extra walking time: The new concourse increases the overall footprint of the terminal. Allow an extra 10 to 15 minutes to navigate between gates.
  • Check gate assignments early: With the addition of new gates, United may shift gate assignments frequently during peak hours.
  • Lounge access: If you have Premier status or a United Club card, locate the Concourse E entrance before you begin shopping to ensure you have time to use the amenities.
  • Loyalty redemption: If you are traveling on an award ticket, check if your specific fare class includes United Club access, as some basic economy tickets do not.

United continues to expand its global network and ground infrastructure. The new Concourse E at IAH is now operational for all scheduled United flights.
