Donate AAdvantage Miles to National Parks This July
American Airlines is inviting AAdvantage members to donate miles to the National Park Foundation (NPF) throughout the month of July. This initiative is a core component of the airline’s “Miles for Our Planet” program, an effort that has been working to fund preservation and expand access to the outdoors since American became the NPF’s first official airline partner in 2021.
As the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, the airline is emphasizing the connection between travel and national heritage. “As our country approaches its 250th anniversary, there’s no better way to reflect on the American story than by experiencing the places that have shaped it,” said American’s Chief Marketing Officer Caroline Clayton. “National parks are some of our greatest treasures, and we’re proud to partner with the National Park Foundation to help more people experience them.”
How to Donate Miles and Enter the Sweepstakes
Beyond the philanthropic donation, travelers have the opportunity to win significant travel rewards through a dedicated summer promotion.
- Donation Window: July 1 through July 31
- Sweepstakes Name: Adventure Awaits
- Grand Prize: 500,000 AAdvantage miles and $10,000 in cash from Forbright Bank
- How to Participate: Visit the official National Park Foundation website to donate miles or enter the sweepstakes.
Maximizing Your AAdvantage Loyalty Value
For frequent flyers, deciding whether to donate miles requires a quick look at redemption math. AAdvantage miles are generally valued between 1.3 and 1.7 cents per mile. While competitors like Delta utilize a strictly dynamic pricing model that can make awards unpredictable, American Airlines offers “Web Special” awards. These discounted redemptions provide a significant advantage for travelers looking to maximize their balance.
Currently, these Web Special awards are trending for high-value redemptions with Oneworld partners, such as booking long-haul flights on British Airways (LHR) or Qatar Airways (DOH). For members who donate surplus miles but wish to replenish their balance, it is worth noting that AAdvantage miles can be earned via transfer partners including Bilt Rewards (1:1), Citi ThankYou Points (1:1), and Marriott Bonvoy (3:1).
What You Can Do This July
If you are looking to support conservation while planning your own summer travels, here are your options:
- Donate Surplus Miles: If you have miles nearing expiration or a surplus that exceeds your upcoming travel needs, visit the NPF website to direct that value toward national park preservation.
- Enter the Sweepstakes: Even if you aren’t donating, you can enter the “Adventure Awaits” sweepstakes for a chance to win the 500,000-mile windfall.
- Plan Park Visits: With over 500 flights to regions near iconic sites like the Grand Canyon or Glacier National Park, use your remaining miles to book a trip to a destination supported by your donation.
